The Blind Boys of Alabama will present a special holiday performance at 8 pm, Friday, Dec. 19, at the Lewis Family Playhouse, Victoria Gardens Cultural Center.

Nearly 75 years after together, Blind Boys of Alabama are not only known for their longevity in the industry, but for the breadth of their catalog and their relevance to contemporary roots music.

Since 2000, they have and four Gospel Music Awards, delivering their spiritual message to countless listeners.

The Blind Boys have earned praise for their re markable interpretations of everything from traditional gospel favorites to contemporary spiritual material. The Blind Boys of Alabama Christmas Show will showcase the band performing selections from their new album, along with Christmas classics and other gems from a 70-plus-year career.

The performing core of the group consists of eight musicians, including four blind singers who have made it their self-proclaimed goal to “spiritually uplift audiences.” In the words of one of the group’s blind members, Ricky McKinnie, “Our disability doesn’t have to be a handicap. It’s not about what you can’t do. It’s about what you do.
