Four Chaffey Joint Union High School students will receive full scholarships, totaling $900,000, to the University of Michigan under a new partnership with the university, alumni and businesses.

The Equal Opportunity Scholarship program is designed to create opportunities for under-represented minority students.

“We’re extremely proud to partner with one of the great universities in the United States in creating highereducation opportunities for our students,” said Mathew Holton, superintendent of the Chaffey District.

Each student will receive a scholarship valued at about $221,000, which should cover all of their expenses over four years.

The recipients are:

Noah De La Riva (Chaffey High School). Noah is a top student at Chaffey High, with a 4.4 grade point average. He also plays on the school’s varsity tennis and football teams, and was recently honored by the Mt. Baldy League as an exceptional student leader. He plans to study in the STEM fields, especially mathematics, at Michigan.

Lisa Garcia (Los Osos High School): Lisa ranks near the top of her graduating class with a grade point average of 4.4. She is a member of the school’s marching band and wind ensemble as the flute section leader for the past two years. This year’s Homecoming Queen plans to study business at Michigan and wants to be an international businesswoman.

Laura Huerta Sanchez (Montclair High School):

Laura is ranked near the top of her class with a 4.6 grade point average and has taken numerous Honors and Advanced Placement classes. She tutors other students and volunteers with the Ronald McDonald House and UNICEF. She hopes to study biology at Michigan and someday become a pediatrician.

Sarah McNair-Wilson (Rancho Cucamonga High School): Sarah mentors fellow students as a member of Link Crew and Peer Tutoring and earned a 4.4 grade point average while enrolled in various Honors and Advanced Placement courses. Sarah will study mathematics at Michigan and wants to become a secondary math teacher.
