Pacific Lifeline’s permanent house residents no longer have to stand in the sun to do their laundry.
When Ashton Whitener of Boy Scout Troop 220 in Chino Hills was looking for a project to complete the requirements for becoming an Eagle Scout, it became clear that he could meet a great need by building a simple shed.
For his Eagle Scout project, Ashton developed the plans, recruited volunteers, poured a cement slab, and built a shed.
Impressive? Yes – and appreciated. “We wish to thank Eagle Scout Ashton Whitener for choosing Pacific Lifeline for his project,” said Janet Povero, staff volunteer coordinator.
“Ashton, along with fellow Scouts, leaders and parents from Troop 220 built a laundry room for our graduate homes. This project was a much needed addition to our property and the services we can offer. Our staff wishes Ashton much success as he moves into his future.” Shelter services Pacific Lifeline has been providing longterm shelter services to homeless women and children since 1995.
In 2009, a permanent house was added to the services, offering a family a home with reduced rent and continued support services such as case management and therapy.
Early in 2015, a second permanent home was added, with another family moving onto the property.
As the renovation of this second permanent home was completed, a very nice washing machine and dryer were donated to the program.
Pacific Lifeline’s shelter includes a laundry room, but the permanent houses did not have similar accommodations. This donation made it possible to offer laundry services, however, the appliances were outside and exposed to the elements, which was not good for the longevity of the appliances or the comfort of those who use them.
Pacific Lifeline has been serving the state of California for over 100 years, and has been in Upland for almost 20 years.
