The City of Rancho Cucamonga will take part in the Police Data Initiative, a White House program that aims to make police activity data more readily available to the public. The Police Data Initiative was created in response to the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, which provides recommendations on actions communities can take to improve law enforcement and enhance community engagement. Many of the Task Force recommendations emphasize the opportunity for cities and Police Departments to use data and technology to build community trust and improve the relationship between citizens and police. The City of Rancho Cucamonga began releasing data about police activities through its online Public Safety Dashboard in April 2015. This dashboard includes interactive data, charts and maps about Police Department and Fire District activities and was created as an initial step to improve transparency and share information with the public about what the City is doing and how well it is doing it. The White House was informed about the City’s existing efforts to share policing data and reached out to Rancho Cucamonga directly with a personal invitation to join their Police Data Initiative, which includes 34 other agencies from throughout the country As part of the City’s participation in the initiative, Rancho Cucamonga has committed to releasing three open datasets about policing activities over the coming months.
