More than 50 women gathered at Walter’s Restaurant in Claremont in March to explore a new opportunity to offer hope and prosperity to local children and teens facing obstacles to their success.
The lunch was hosted by the Hope Through Housing Foundation and included a diverse group of women from throughout the region.
Guests arrived to find a beautiful patio decorated with fresh flowers, lavender accents, and a Women of Hope gift. Included were women who have been involved with the organization for years, and others were invited by friends to learn about this new women’s philanthropy circle.
Guests learned about the needs of low-income children and teens, and what the statistics say about their future without the involvement of caring adults. Statistically, youth from disadvantaged families are more likely to have poor academic achievement, lower rates of high school graduation, and less positive social and emotional development – putting them on a path to limited productivity and earnings when they become adults.
“The Women of Hope is a group of strong and compassionate women standing together to help youth from low-income families to overcome barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential,” said Alyssa Cotter, Director of Development. “With our collective voice, we are helping these youngsters on their journey to endless possibilities by preparing them for future success.”
Several Hope Through Housing leaders and volunteers spoke during the lunch, sharing the vision for Women of Hope. With a minimum annual commitment of $500 or more, women were invited to become members of Women of Hope with many pledging much greater amounts personally or from their businesses.
All funds raised by the group will help support programs for youth living within local affordable housing communities, including homework help, role modeling, exercise, nutrition, and career readiness. Future member events will include social gatherings, volunteer activities with youth, committee meetings, and a signature fundraising event.
A schedule of upcoming activities has been created and is available, along with additional information on joining the Women of Hope. To learn more, visit www.hthf.org/women-of-hope.
