The City of Rancho Cucamonga and National Community Renaissance (National CORE) this month held a groundbreaking ceremony for Day Creek Villas, a stunning affordable housing community for seniors ages 62 and older located along the Pacific Electric Trail.
When completed, Day Creek Villas will feature 131 one-bedroom and eight two-bedroom apartment homes for seniors making between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income, and one additional unit for the manager.
“I commend both the City of Rancho Cucamonga and National CORE for their commitment to providing affordable housing options for our aging population,” California State Treasurer Fiona Ma said at the event.
“With senior poverty on the rise because of disappearing pensions and inadequate retirement benefits, developments such as Day Creek Villas will become even more critical as we continue to address the housing crisis in our State.”
National Community Renaissance, based in Rancho Cucamonga, is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit developers of affordable housing. National CORE manages nearly 9,000 affordable, senior and market-rate units in California, Texas, Arkansas, and Florida.
Day Creek Villas will be National CORE’s ninth affordable housing community in the city and represents the 27-year public/private partnership that has resulted in more than 1,600 high-quality apartment homes for individuals, families, and seniors.
“We’re thrilled to be able to continue working with the city to address a critical need for affordable housing in our community,” said Jeff Burum, Founder and Chairman of the Board for National CORE.
Steve PonTell, President and CEO of National CORE said longstanding partnership with the city has made it possible for us to transform the lives of thousands of residents and create economic opportunities for the community at large.
Ideal location for seniors
The community’s location is ideal for seniors, within walking distance of the Day Creek Marketplace and the Estate Winery Marketplace, providing residents access to grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, and other local businesses.
Amenities will include a swimming pool, outdoor lounges and fireplaces, and a community center to serve as a hub for resident activities.
National CORE’s resident services provider, the Hope through Housing Foundation, will support senior residents with a variety of onsite programs and services that focus on basic needs, physical and mental health, and social connectedness.
“It is a great day for the City of Rancho Cucamonga,” Mayor Pro Tem Lynne B. Kennedy said. “I cannot thank enough all of the community members and stakeholders who have worked together to make this development possible, especially National CORE, who continues to challenge misconceptions about affordable housing with the development of beautiful service-enriched communities that truly impacts lives.”
Development partners include the City of Rancho Cucamonga, California Tax Credit Allocation Committee, California Debt Limit Allocation Committee, Chase, Hudson Housing Capital, Century Housing, Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino, and FHLB of San Francisco AHP.
“Day Creek Villas will bring needed affordable housing to the City of Rancho Cucamonga, as well as programs and services that help improve residents’ lives and make an impact in the community,” said Cecile Chalifour, West Division Manager, Community Development Banking, Chase “We’re proud to work with National CORE and are dedicated to supporting local community development.
Sam Ganeshan, Managing Director of Hudson Housing Capital, noted a partnership with National CORE spanning nearly 20 years and more than 20 communities.
“Day Creek Villas is all the more special because it is Hudson’s first zero net energy development in California,” Ganeshan said. “It is no surprise to Hudson that National CORE is leading the effort to promote both environmental and community well-being through high-quality housing for seniors in the Inland Empire.”
