Peter Weinberger, Publisher of the Claremont Courier, will speak at the March monthly luncheon of the Democratic Club of Claremont, 11:45 a.m., March 13, at Eddie’s Italian Eatery in the Stater Bros. shopping center, Foothill Blvd., Claremont.
The program, another in the Gar Byrum Distinguished Speaker Series, will feature Weinberger discussing “The Death of Local News.”
The Courier, owned by the Weinberger family since 1955, was named the top community newspaper in California by the California News Publishers Association in 2018.
Throughout the United States, there has been a decline in newspaper firms and reporting, and a transfer of audience to other media and technology, along with a loss of advertising. The Courier is distinguished for maintaining community engagement while innovating new forms of journalism, including use of a drone for visual story telling.
The Friday luncheon is $17 and includes beverage, tax and tip.
The program featuring Weinberger begins at 12:45 PM and is free. Both luncheon and program are open to the public.
