That main level is top-tier
Completed in 1937, the house combines clean lines, walls of glass and corner windows to create open, light-filled formal rooms on the main level. Like many hillside homes of the era, the floor plan was inverted so that the bedrooms are below the communal areas and open to the outdoors.

Creativity, invention lived here
The whimsical 1930s Tudor, with its herringbone brickwork and half timbering, includes the recording studio and rehearsal space that Zappa had built as well as “the vault” — a climate-controlled, multiroom space where he kept a secret collection of music and film recordings.

Glam is only part of the job

Teaching some old digs new tricks
Aportion of the roof, beset by dry rot and termites, needed to be replaced; new eaves were also added. The remaining $120,000 in upgrades was largely cosmetic, such as a new paint job that replaced the previous dirty white exterior with a chic hue: a Ralph Lauren charcoal piped white around the roofline and windows.
