‘The Snow Queen’ comes to Glendale

Once upon a time, there was a wicked magician. He fashioned a mirror with the power to make all that was good and beautiful appear in the mirror as mean and wicked. Alas, the unthinkable happened … the mirror was shattered into a million tiny pieces, swept up by the wind and spread throughout the land, affecting unsuspecting townsfolk. The Snow Queen, creator of winter wind and snow, was also profoundly affected as the tiny slivers of mirror lodged into her very soul.

Dark times soon followed…

And that is how the scene is set for California Contemporary Ballet’s “The Snow Queen,” a ballet that tells the incredible story of the jealous, cold-hearted Snow Queen and the two dear friends, Kai and Gerda, torn apart by her wrath.

The audience embarks on an incredible journey and meets fascinating characters as this classic tale is brought to life. The Enchantress, Gypsy Girl, Gypsy Boy and Crows are introduced along the way and viewers enjoy the beautiful dance of the Prince and Princess performing a grand pas de deux. Follow Gerda as she experiences perilous obstacles and, in the end, rejoice in the celebration of a town freed at last from the mirror’s evil spell.

“The Snow Queen” is performed with power and passion by a professional principal cast — the stellar career dancers of California Contemporary Ballet, accompanied by California Contemporary Youth Ballet members.

Brought to life by the creative vision of the company’s artistic director and choreographer, Erin Holt, “The Snow Queen” ballet is presented complete with brilliant lighting and set design, custom hand-sewn costumes and an original musical score by Randall Michael Tobin.

Its seasonal performances already a hit with audiences, California Contemporary Ballet’s version of this Hans Christian Andersen tale of good versus evil has become a wintertime classic.

“The Snow Queen” will be performed at Glendale Community College on Dec. 17, 18 and 19. Tickets are on sale now at Brown Paper Tickets: www.ccballet.net/pages/3119/store.html.
