Taking that seasonal sojourn to Italy, or anywhere in Southern Europe? Here are some packing tips
Heading to Lake Iseo, Como, any other part of Italy or a country nearby? Packing for a winter vacation in the Mediterranean requires preparation for cooler temperatures and potentially wet weather.
While the winter climate varies by country and specific region, you can expect chillier temperatures. Utilizing this handy packing list, you will be well-prepared to enjoy the Mediterranean’s winter charm while staying warm and cozy.
CLOTHING
Versatile Outerwear
Consider bringing a light, water-resistant overcoat – such as a longer all-weather trench or a shorter waxed-cotton jacket – that will be easy to pack and take with you for the day in case you encounter any unforeseen wind or showers.
Make sure to do some specific research ahead of your trip on weather conditions for your chosen destination, as, in some cases, bringing along some heavier-duty rain protection or warmer cold-weather insulation may be necessary to ensure your comfort.
Coordinating Layers
Chunkier, boxier cardigans and sweaters make great top layers, with different material offerings providing varying degrees of added warmth.
Thinner
fitted sweaters and T-shirts can serve as base layers in the cold or,
if warmer weather permits, be worn independently. Specialty base layers,
crafted from thermoregulating materials intended for specific
temperature ranges and designed to be worn under clothing, are useful to
have on hand in both bottoms and tops as well.
A
vest can also be a useful addition to your layering arsenal, providing
less intense coverage as a top layer when the warmth of a full-length
sleeve feels excessive or, if needed, serving as an additional layer
underneath a cardigan or sweater for extra core warmth.
All-Purpose Pants
Pack
jeans, trousers, or wool pants to keep your legs warm during the day.
Opt for looser-fitting pairs with higher waistlines to allow for the
addition of a base layer — like merino tights/leggings or long underwear
– when temperatures may drop.
Cozy Complements
Add
wool or thermal socks on your list to keep your feet warm and dry. For
walking days, make sure you choose socks in a moisture-wicking material,
like merino wool, to prevent blisters.
Functional Footwear
Comfortable,
waterproof or weather-resistant shoes with good traction – ideally, lug
soles – are necessary for walking on wet and possibly icy streets.
Elevated Attire
Before
packing, consider any potential or planned dinners, nights out, or
events during your trip that may warrant dressier attire. Since personal
needs will vary based on types of plans, prescribed dress codes,
different settings, and overall quantity, we recommend consulting your
individual itinerary to determine what your specific trip and plans call
for. Jotting down a rough, initial list of each fancier “outfit” you’ll
need can help make sure you cover all of your bases in this arena.
Accessories Protective Extras
Occasional rain can be expected, so make sure you throw a travel-sized umbrella in your suitcase to have on hand.
Even
on any not-so-sunny days you may encounter, you should never skimp on
sun safety. The sun can be low in the sky during the winter, so
sunglasses are still important for protecting your eyes from the sun.
Look for UVA/UVB protection and, if possible, polarized lenses to
maximize eye protection.
Everyday Carry
A
crossbody bag, backpack, or other purse with secure closures is
necessary to carry all of your essentials throughout the day.
Pickpocketing is a common issue in many Mediterranean cities, so make
sure to read up on your chosen destination, and bring a bag that helps
to prevent this threat.
Travel Guidebook/App and Phrasebook
A
guidebook or travel app can be helpful when planning your trip and for
navigation. While many people in this region do speak English, having a
basic phrasebook can enhance your interaction with the locals and be a
fun way to improve your ability to speak a foreign language!
