San Dimas teacher, students to paint Veterans’ Monument mural

The San Dimas HEROES organization has commissioned San Dimas High School art teacher Dominic Black to design a mural for the Veterans’ Monument.

The proposed mural will be painted by Black and his art students, and will be located on the newly constructed south wall of the monument, which will not be needed for the addition of veterans’ names until after the north wall has been completely filled. Plans are to have the mural in place for the monument unveiling and dedication ceremonies on Veterans’ Day, Monday, Nov. 11.

Black is a professional artist and the Veterans Monument mural project will be the fourth in his San Dimas Student Art Public Project, as there are already three student mural projects in San Dimas that were designed and painted by Black and art students from the high school. The student mural projects have been very well-received within the community.

Civil rights leader Evers-Williams to speak at Scripps College event

Upland Library launches online community fundraiser

The Upland Public Library is seeking community donations through an online fundraiser that runs through Nov. 30.

The donations will help the library provide students, teachers and parents with new books for reading, research and curriculum supplements.

“I cannot think of a better present than a good book,” said Upland Mayor Ray Musser.

For every $25 donated, the library can purchase one or two new books that will be ready to be shelved and checked out. Most importantly, 100 percent of every donation goes toward putting new books on the library’s bookshelves.

Last year the library raised $2,545 in this online fundraising program.

To participate, donors can go to www.funds4books.com to log in to Upland Public Library’s personal Funds4Books page with the code 41dd. For more information, contact principal librarian Maria Sunio at msunio@ci.upland.ca.us or 909-931-4296.
