About 300 students, faculty, and staff cleaned up downtown Pomona with Mayor Tim Sandoval, sorted food pantries for the homeless, played bingo with senior citizens, and participated in other community service initiatives during the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 15.

The campus community has held the event about seven years, sending volunteers to various sites around Southern California. The day aligns with the university’s core values of civic and community engagement; diversity and inclusivity; ethical reasoning, and lifelong learning.

It also honors Dr. King’s legacy of service.

Volunteers spread out to various work sites, cataloguing artifacts at the African- American Museum of Beginnings in Pomona, tutoring grade school students at Pomona’s City of Knowledge Islamic School, and organizing storage for the Foothill AIDS Project in Claremont.
