Founded by the Claremont Schools’ Director of Music George Denes, the Claremont Symphomy Orchestra has brought free classical music concerts to surrounding communities since 1953. To remember its founder and his wife Bessie, the orchestra will honor Denes family members by performing the magnificent Sibelius Symphony #2, which Mr. Denes conducted on the CSO’s 25th anniversary concert. The concert of great orchestral music, ranging from somber to celebratory, will be 3:30 p.m. today. Under the baton of Associate Conductor Ruth Charloff, the concert will open with Johannes Brahms’ restless and stormy “Tragic Overture.” Next comes the delightful “Little Suite” by the great mid-20th-century Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski, incorporating folk tunes and dances spiked with modern harmonies and playful rhythms. The concert finale will be the Second Symphony from the romantic composer Jean Sibelius. The free concert will be held at Bridges Hall of Music on the Pomona College campus in Claremont.
