Promise Scholars awarded $80,000 in scholarships to Class of 2020 students, with $13,500 to recipients of its first ever Promise Scholars “Complete Your Journey” Opportunity Scholarship.

Chaffey High student Jorge Guzman earned a $10,000 scholarship for completing all nine college planning steps laid out in the Promise Scholars Opportunity Scholarship program.

Jorge, a Class of 2020 graduate, attended Wiltsey Middle and Corona Elementary schools in Ontario. He plans to attend Cal Poly Pomona in the fall and major in Computer Science.

“When I first received the news, I was very surprised and happy. I never really win things but this time I won big. I was struggling to figure out how I would cover the cost of college but this solves all of my problems,” said Guzman. “I’m extremely thankful to be given this scholarship and plan to make the best of it.”

Kristine Scott, the Ontario-Montclair Schools Foundation (Promise Scholars) Board President is thrilled that the highest number of students ever in the community are receiving scholarships through the Opportunity Scholarship and through various partnerships in the community, including Edison International with $10,000 in STEM scholarships, $27,000 in scholarships with the Inland Empire Community Foundation, and $30,000 in scholarships together with the Esperanza Foundation.

“To those students who, for any reason, may have counted themselves out of scholarship opportunities, this program is for you. There is so much talent in the community,” said Ráelyne Moreno, Promise Scholars High School Supervisor.

Over 800 students took part in one or more of the Opportunity Scholarship steps.

Promise Scholars will be offering the “Complete Your Journey” Opportunity Scholarship series to the Class of 2021 starting in August 2020. Students who complete all nine steps will be eligible for a $10,000 scholarship next May.
