It’s the most wonderful time of the year for many of us – a time to enjoy family and friends, and to relish in the hustle and bustle of holiday traditions.

However, at German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County (GSROC), volunteers are scrambling to care for more than 80 abandoned and unwanted German shepherds of all ages and sizes. Founded in 1998, the grass-roots rescue group successfully rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes approximately 400 dogs every year. Many are rescued from high kill shelters on their “last day.” Others are surrendered by families and some are abandoned and found scavenging for food on the streets.

Often the dogs arrive in need of extensive and expensive veterinary care as well as training to make them more adoptable. The group relies entirely on donations to care for its orphans. Toby, seen here at right, is a beautiful 2-yearold purebred shepherd who loves all dogs and all people. He even likes cats. He was born with a malformed front leg, so he uses a customized prosthetic device to help him walk.

This holiday season, please consider opening your heart to a homeless German shepherd. Your donation in any amount can mean the difference between life and death for a dog with nowhere to turn.
