Dear Reader,

Introducing Hot Property: The Design Issue, our first-ever magazine saluting the trendsetters behind the most luxurious estates in Southern California. We’ve featured the area’s most influential designers and highlighted the latest design trends from notable projects along with the team of architects, homebuilders and real estate agents who were involved.

More than mere places to sleep, eat and binge favorite shows, these living spaces represent cutting-edge design and forward thinking, realized by impeccable construction. Soothing lines and interesting textures combine with delicate details to create cohesive units. The outdoors is invited to comingle seamlessly with the indoors, while every space perfectly marries form with function.

Thanks to visionary designers who draw diversely from high fashion to the beauty of nature to their own worldly travels, two-dimensional dreams are brought to life as tangible structures of wood, glass and steel that inspire awe and take your breath away.

Finally, we look forward to celebrating these trendsetters with a reception at The Kitchen at L.A. Times when it is safe to do so.

“The kitchen is the heart of any home, and our brand-new, indoor-outdoor kitchen will be the hub that brings everything together at our Los Angeles Times headquarters,” said Michele Chan Soon-Shiong, owner of the L.A. Times who oversaw the development of The Kitchen. “From the moment we began planning for the future of the L.A. Times, I knew that we needed to continue the tradition of testing and publishing recipes and create a space that honors the industrial history of our location, embraces the Southern California lifestyle and accommodates all types of cuisine – from street food to fine dining. We’re incredibly excited to begin welcoming the community into our custom-designed space.”

Designed by Tichenor & Thorp Architects, The Kitchen at L.A. Times is the perfect embodiment of approachably elegant design, conceived holistically as a test kitchen and production space for video filming, streaming and recording. Principals M. Brian Tichenor, AIA, and Raun L. Thorp, AIA, endeavored to bring some of the outside in, enabling test kitchen and guest chefs to prepare and present dishes in a space that’s functional, dynamic and sophisticated — but still down to earth. We also thank our partners Gaggenau, Kalamazoo, Dornbracht, Summit Furniture and Williams Sonoma for bringing our vision to life.
