STEP INTO THE COLORFUL WORLD OF BAZ LUHRMANN’S IMAGINATION

Imagine the characters from Baz Luhrmann’s movies got together one night and put on a concert. Produced by Cirque du Soleil Theatrical, “For The Record: Baz” is a live reimagining of three of the celebrated director’s films: “The Great Gatsby,” “Romeo + Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge.”

“It’s really a celebration inside the world of Baz Luhrmann’s mind,” co-creator and executive producer Shane Scheel told the Vegas Guide.

The 90-minute extravaganza features a triple-threat ensemble cast, a live band, 42 original arrangements of songs from the three films’ soundtracks, a custom stage and a 120-foot projection screen made specifically for Light Nightclub at Mandalay Bay.

“The show leaps off the stage and into the bar,” Scheel said. “The actors are performing on all surfaces — on top of booths, on tables, in the aisles.”

The production is an immersive experience — rock concert, club and musical theater blended into one. “You’re not just watching people on a stage,” Scheel points out. “And no, you don’t have to dance.”

Although “Baz” debuted in Sin City this past summer, the concert mash-up launched two years ago in Los Feliz, then continued to evolve as it moved to West Hollywood.

“That’s when Cirque du Soleil saw it about a year ago and we started talking about the Vegas experience,” Scheel explained.

Leu Strope, managing director of Light, added, “The production is exhilarating. It’s intimate, it’s just a little bit gritty and it’s unlike anything the Strip has seen before.”

“Baz” runs Wednesday through Monday at 8 p.m. On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, audiences can stay after the show as Light transitions into a full-on club. Tickets start at $55.

Admission is open to adults, ages 21 and up.
