Sheathed in redwood siding, the curving design is equal parts house and observatory thanks to a radiating living room with walls of glass and an adjoining terrace with views of the San Fernando Valley. At 1,200 square feet, the two-bedroom home is among the smallest projects by the forwardthinking architect.

The not-so-secret past of a Roaring ’20s estate
Constructed during the Prohibition era, when the manufacture and sale of alcohol was outlawed, the 1924 home was designed with a hidden passageway and concealed liquor storage. Slang terms such as “juice joint,” “hair of the dog” and “zozzled” were part of the lexicon of the day.

This area was completely enclosed. It had four walls and was divided into four tiny rooms. So we completely expanded it and turned it into an open concept. We added this big sliding door because it was really important to us to have a space that flowed easily from inside to outside.
