Choose Filippi’s Pizza Grotto for pizza, salads, sandwiches and more
In 2019 swept the Best of San Diego with the best Italian restaurant and the best pizza in San Diego. The legacy of Filippi’s rolls on, and they continue to grow. The first Filippi’s was opened in 1950 by the DePhilippis family from the current Italian cash & carry store in Little Italy.
What has really made Filippi’s great is their pizza, pasta, salads and sandwiches; robust homemade marinara sauce, zesty Parmesan, garlic bread and devilishly good Alfredo sauce; and of course, big portions and affordable pricing.
The appetizer list has fried mozzarella or zucchini, calamari rings, chicken wings in some locations. For a salad, the antipasti is always a good bet. If pizza is on the agenda, try one of their specials: Fit for a King, topped with cheese, sausage, mushroom, pepperoni, black olives, bell peppers and onions; the Hawaiian-style, loaded with ham, cheese and pineapple; Special All White Pizza, made with mozzarella and provolone cheese, garlic and oil; and Filippi’s popular The Works.
Filippi’s also has a great lasagna, spaghetti with meat or marinara sauce, fettuccine Alfredo, linguine in red or white clam sauce, and shrimp Filippi’s. Other entrees include eggplant Parmigiana, veal scaloppini, veal Parmigiana, and chicken Parmigiana. Dinner entrees typically include soup, salad and garlic bread.
