George DeVries co-founded American Specialty Health (ASH) in 1987 from the second bedroom of his condo in San Diego with just a few thousand dollars. His goal was to develop specialty health care programs and integrate them into traditional medical plans offered by Fortune 500 employers, insurance companies and health plans. Today, 35 years later, ASH is one of the nation’s premier specialty health organizations offering musculoskeletal health, fitness and health improvement programs for health plans, employers, associations, and, most recently, direct-to-consumer programs. ASH covers more than 52 million members.

The journey from a start-up to a $600-billion company was paved with innovation and "industry firsts." When DeVries first co-founded ASH, he focused on developing the first-ever chiropractic provider network program in California, offering a supplemental chiropractic benefit to California health plans. ASH earned revenue of more than $600 million in 2021 and employs more than 1,500 people.
