If you’re reading this with your cup of morning coffee, I’m probably sleeping. I will have just arrived home after a two-week trip to visit Singapore and Malaysia.

We are visiting Asia to attend my cousin’s wedding in Malaysia. But most importantly, we want to show my sons Stratton, 8, and Chance, 9, where my family comes from.

We are Chinese but my father was born and raised in Singapore, and my mother in Malaysia.

This area of the world is so beautiful, but very different from the where my kids are raised.

Singapore is only 31 miles long east to west and 16 miles long north to south. This is also an extremely beautiful and proud country and has such kind, caring inhabitants, especially my family members.

In Malaysia, which has retained more of its natural rainforest habitat, we saw monkeys in the trees, large moths that resembled old leaves or sticks, monitor lizards, even baby bats hiding within a palm frond.

At a gathering of 50 extended family members, my youngest son tugged my sleeve to ask me why all my relatives are Chinese. Hopefully this will no longer be a question for him after this vacation and all the memorable experiences.
