Monday: ‘A Touch of Salsa,’ 7:30 p.m.

The Ontario/Chaffey Community Show Band will present “A Touch of Salsa” 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15 at Merton Hill Auditorium, located at the corner of N. Euclid Ave. and Fifth Street in Ontario.

The performance pays tribute to Hispanic culture and is highlighted by an array of exciting Latin music featuring the outstanding musicians of the Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band, with guest conductor, Dr. Jorge Garcia, Assistant Director of the Pomona Concert Band.

The show repertoire includes a medley of traditional folk tunes that will be sung by the Chris McAleer entitled “Mexican Folk Song Suite.” Chris will also sing a bossa nova piece entitled “Gio’s Restaurant.”

Show Band trombonist David Abergo will perform an original piece composed for him by Music Director Dr. Gabe Petrocelli entitled “Salsa Caliente.” French horn musician and vocalist Isaac Gonzalez will sing “Acompaname” and the famous composition by Agustin Lara entitled “Granada.”

Show Band musician Kathy Soderlund will be featured as a dancer on three selections, “Besame Mucho,” “Malaguena,” and “The Ballerina and Green Guitar,” a piece written especially for her by Dr. Petrocelli that also features her husband Ken Soderlund as guitar soloist. Show Band guitarist Roman Foranda pays tribute to the musical influence and contribution to Latin music by Carlos Santana by performing two of his greatest hits “Black Magic Woman” and “Europa.”

The Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band was founded in 1985 by R. Jack Mercer and is now under the direction of Dr. Gabe Petrocelli and assistant directors David Schaafsma and Pat Arnold. Band members represent at least two dozen communities throughout Southern California.

The band performs monthly concerts in Merton Hill Auditorium as well as at other venues throughout the community. All performances are free to the public.

The Show Band rehearses 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday nights at Chaffey High School in the Jack Mercer Music Hall. Visitors are welcome to bring and instrument and sit in with the band.
