Despite change, one thing is constant: the need for your local spcaLA.
And, its need for you. Every year, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) investigates thousands of animal cruelty complaints, right here in Los Angeles.
In the course of one animal cruelty investigation, spcaLA humane officers met a dog named Lucy.
Lucy had cropped ears and the appearance of a pit bull, so her owners were probably disappointed in her sweet, gentle manner. She lived in filthy conditions and was denied adequate food, water, and veterinary care.
Sick, underweight, and all-but forgotten, Lucy was taken to spcaLA.
Almost immediately upon arrival, Lucy started giving birth and didn’t stop. She gave birth to 15 puppies!
Her large litter and prior mistreatment meant that Lucy needed a lot of help taking care of her puppies, including nursing. Where Lucy fell behind, spcaLA volunteers bottle-fed the pups round the clock.
spcaLA provided veterinary care, safe shelter, and TLC to Lucy and her pups. spcaLA animal behavior specialists worked with the dogs daily, to help get the puppies properly socialized and help Lucy recover from her trauma.
After a few months of TLC, Lucy and her puppies recovered and started to thrive. They were ready to be adopted. Thanks to the support of spcaLA donors, all are safe and spending the holiday season in new, loving homes.
Lucy’s abusers were convicted of animal cruelty. There will always be a Lucy. Please, help make sure she always has a local advocate: donate to spcaLA.
