During pregnancy and beyond, MOMS Orange County helps expectant parents prepare for the incredible journey of having a baby. Because for parents who are alone or have other challenges, that journey can be difficult. When Martina and her husband were expecting their first baby Jonathan, they had no extended family in Orange County, no support system. She felt very isolated. Fortunately, Martina found MOMS Orange County. Each month, she was visited at home by a MOMS’ Maternal-Child Health Coordinator who befriended her, educated her about having a healthy pregnancy, and screened her for health risks. Martina also attended group classes where she gained further information and met other parents. After Jonathan arrived, her home visitor coached her on how to care for her newborn and what to expect during each stage of his first year of life. Each month, Jonathan was screened to make sure he was reaching important developmental milestones. Not only did Martina gain a steadfast friend in MOMS, she gained knowledge and confidence about her pregnancy, staying healthy, child development and parenting. She became an informed advocate for her baby. “No matter what we’ve faced, the staff at MOMS Orange County has been there for my family: as a resource, as an anchor, as a friend,” Martina said.
