About Us MEND was started in 1971 by Ed and Carolyn Rose, a young couple in their early 30s who wanted to do something to help the neediest families in their San Fernando Valley neighborhood. From this humble beginning, MEND has grown to serve thousands of the Valley’s most vulnerable families, seniors and homeless. It operates LA’s second largest food bank, benefiting over 200,000 people a year with good food; plus homeless care services, clothing center, and robust case management programs to help low-income families and individuals address and overcome challenges that keep them from thriving.
