As chief executive officer of CalOptima Health, Michael Hunn leads one of Orange County’s largest public agencies, serving nearly a million Medi-Cal members and managing a $4-billion budget with a focus on access, equity and innovation. His career spans over 25 years in health care leadership, including nine hospital CEO roles before assuming the helm at CalOptima in 2021. Under Hunn’s guidance, the agency has launched pioneering initiatives such as Orange County’s first Street Medicine Program, behavioral telehealth expansion and a $50-million provider workforce development fund. He has overseen the largest provider rate increase in CalOptima’s history and invested $160 million in housing initiatives that tie stable living to long-term health outcomes. From school-based behavioral health partnerships to countywide cancer screening campaigns, his collaborative leadership has reshaped Orange County’s health infrastructure. In 2025, Hunn led CalOptima’s investment in 250,000 naloxone doses, making it the first Medi-Cal plan to mobilize against the opioid crisis at this scale.
